RELEASE: Rep. Meadows Statement on DRC Election Results

Washington, D.C. - Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) released the following statement on election results in the Democratic Republic of the Congo:

"The United States, the African Union, and supporters of democratic government everywhere must continue to insist that the will of Congolese voters be respected. The Kabila regime’s fabrication of election results is antithetical to principles of Democracy, and last December’s historic free and fair vote deserves to be honored.

“Congress is encouraged by the African Union’s call to suspend the proclamation of the final results of the elections and its decision to send a delegation to the DRC to find a way out of the post-electoral crisis. Numerous experts, election observers, and the independent election-watching efforts of the Catholic Church have brought forth sound evidence that the Kabila regime lied about election results. As the African Union and the Congolese people work to finally realize a democratically elected government, the United States must back this process and make clear that it will use the many tools at its disposal to hold the perpetrators of violence and those who undermine the integrity of these elections fully accountable.

“President Trump’s Administration has already made a commitment to democracy and deeper engagement in Africa, and I support further efforts by Secretary Pompeo, Assistant Secretary Nagy, Ambassador Bolton, and Special Envoy Pham to ensure the ballot box is respected.”
