Rep. Mark Meadows: Pagliano ‘Must be Dealt with…Has to Be A Red Line in The Sand’

( – Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) told reporters on Capitol Hill Wednesday that there are “discussions” going on about how to deal with Bryan Pagliano, a former State Department IT employee who worked on Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s private server.

Pagliano ignored a subpoena to appear before the House Oversight Committee Tuesday.

Meadows argued that “a red line in the sand” has to be drawn over this behavior.

Pagliano previously pled the Fifth in a closed door session with the House Select Committee on Benghazi last year. He was also granted limited immunity by the Department of Justice last year to be interviewed by the FBI.

“There’s discussions that are going on right now,” Meadows said regarding Pagliano’s flouting of the congressional subpoena. “I speak for myself that being able to pick and choose the place of which you invoke the Fifth is not a constitutional right, and so to suggest that I was willing, you know, to only plead the Fifth in the privacy of a closed room is not something that I can find anywhere in the text of the Constitution, and I do not believe it is a protected right.

“To thwart a subpoena that would compel someone to show up is something that must be dealt with for the integrity of this institution – and I think has to be a, to use an over-used line, a red line in the sand,” Meadows emphasized.

“It’s a serious matter,” House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) said of Pagliano’s failure to appear Tuesday.

“Mr. Pagliano has chosen to evade a subpoena duly issued by the committee of the United States House of Representatives. I will consult with counsel and my colleagues to consider a full range of options available to address Mr. Pagliano’s failure to appear,” he said.
