RELEASE:
Rep. Meadows’ Statement on Withdrawal from Iran Nuclear Deal

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) released the following statement on President Trump’s decision to reimpose sanctions on Iran and withdraw from the Iran Nuclear Deal:

“From its very inception, the Iran Deal was nothing short of a foreign policy debacle. The Obama administration gave Iran an estimated $100 billion, accelerated Iran's nuclear proliferation, and handed over every U.S. bargaining chip to the Iranian regime— conceding far too much for far too little in return.

The agreement affirmed a regime that has shown no intention of negotiating in good faith. It financially bolstered a known state sponsor of terrorism, and one that has publicly threatened to wipe Israel off the map. It put Iran’s nuclear capabilities on a fast-track to success. Quite simply: the Iran Deal put America and our allies at risk.

President Trump is absolutely right to reinstate sanctions. It is the job of Congress to develop a comprehensive strategy to deal with Iran and its apparent intentions regarding nuclear capability, using diplomacy rather than ineffective appeasement tactics that only embolden the Iranian regime. The United States and our allies will be far better served by an America that negotiates with Iran from a position of strength, rather than relying upon an agreement built on a foundation of lies, deception, and naivete.

The President’s decision today reflected the reality that the United States can do better—and we will. This is a welcome development. This is a victory for a safer and more secure America.”
