FLETCHER, N.C. (WLOS) — Representative Mark Meadows says within weeks, he believes we should see legislation that reduces prescription drug prices.

He made that statement to News 13’s while touring Rinehart Racing in Fletcher, a manufacturing company that produces motorcycle exhaust products.

Representative Meadows says this is bipartisan legislation.

We asked him about unifying the country, and how divisive things have become. He says one of the fixes is having something that people can rally around, and these reduced prescription drug prices could be that.

Rep. Meadows says within weeks, he believes we should see legislation that reduces prescription drug prices.

And how much of a reduction is he talking?

"Our goal is to reduce prescription drug prices by 30%, which is a substantial reduction, and it’s really about those very expensive drugs," Meadows told us. "Trying to get them to come down to where people don’t have to worry about whether they can afford them or not."

The issue of prescription drug prices has been on the president's agenda for some time. Those efforts have fallen short thus far, so we’ll have to see what this legislation will be and if it sticks.

While we toured Rinehart, Meadows asked a number of questions of the owner and CEO Judd Hollifield.

He also addressed the current tariffs on aluminum and steel which have hit Rinehart Racing pretty hard. Hollifield says when those tariffs went into effect, American companies increased prices.

He says his costs on American steel went up 40%, and American aluminum went up 30%. And he says rather than 2-3 weeks, it’s more like 16 weeks for him to receive it.

We asked Meadows about what’s being done to help American manufacturers.

"Long-term vision, manufacturers like Rinehart Racing, as long as there’s certainty in where they’re going, they know how to adjust to that. But a lot of times, it’s the uncertainty that hurts, so hopefully we’ll see that restored in the coming months," Meadows said.

He says part of helping manufacturers also includes making sure they’re not getting price-gouged.

Rinehart CEO Hollifield says the next steps are heading to DC to continue the conversation.
