Cutting Spending

On Wednesday, I voted with 266 of my House colleagues to support a continuing resolution that will fund the federal government through September 30th at a level we haven’t seen since 2007.

I made a promise to Western North Carolinians that I would fight to reduce government spending in Washington, D.C. By voting for this continuing resolution, I did just that. The resolution maintains the level of cuts in the sequester, which reflects $85 billion in spending reductions.

While I strongly believe the budget cuts in the president’s sequester could be implemented in a more thoughtful way, it is imperative that Congress continues to address our nation’s $16.7 trillion debt. While hardworking Americans across the country have had to rein in their spending due to the down economy, it is time that Washington politicians do the same.

I am committed to cutting spending and supporting reforms that will balance the budget in 10 years, while continuing to meet our obligations to our military and veterans.

Tourquester

The White House announced this week that it will no longer be giving public tours due to “staffing reductions resulting from sequestration,” according to the White House Visitors Office.

While our staff relayed the disappointing news to numerous constituents who had already scheduled tours through our office for their families, I sent a letter to the president seeking answers about the upcoming cancellations.  In the letter, I told the president that this decision appears to be purely political in nature rather than being in the best interest of the American people.

The letter seeks information about the funding that the president will allegedly save by suspending public tours, the list of positions that have been furloughed or terminated as a result, and any other considerations the White House has made to cut costs.

I continue to await his reply.
