Washington, D.C. - Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) released the following statement:

“Now that the “Russian Collusion” and “Obstruction of Justice” fantasies are dead and gone, House Democrats have decided to move right on down their political hit list. Now they want to investigate decade-old financial documents from the President’s days as a private citizen. They are even demanding documents related to alleged editorial decisions made at Fox News—a stunning breach of precedent and a grave First Amendment concern. Can you imagine if Republicans used a Committee gavel to interrogate the politics of a news organization?

These investigations were arranged in secret, without notifying GOP members on the committee.

This display is nakedly partisan, political, and totally unserious. Demanding documents of this nature from private citizens is well outside the scope of what Congress should be investigating, and worse, it has absolutely nothing to do with overseeing and improving the operations of the federal government for our constituents—what our voters expect us to focus on. This is a far cry from the responsible oversight our Democrat colleagues pledged.

The majority should reverse course away from these politically motivated investigations. With choices like these, Democrats have made their focus clear—and that focus evidently is not our constituents. Seemingly, their goal is to instead weaponize their Congressional seats for political retaliation against a President who beat them in an election they expected to win.

Americans deserve better.”
