Rep. Meadows' Statement on FY 2018 Budget Resolution

Washington, D.C. –  Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) released the following statement after Thursday’s vote in the House of Representatives to pass H.Con.Res 71, the FY 2018 budget resolution that will allow the House to consider tax reform under budget reconciliation rules with the Senate.

“The debate surrounding the nation’s tax system comes down to a few simple ideas: taxes should be lower, the tax code needs to be simpler, and hard-working, tax-paying men and women in America should be allowed to keep more of their own hard-earned money. The need for these principles is why it’s so critical that Republicans succeed in our once-in-a-generation opportunity to reform our tax code. Today’s vote is a foundational step toward finally delivering those reforms the American people desperately need. In the coming days and weeks, I look forward to working with my colleagues to develop a full tax reform plan that follows through on these principles and delivers real benefits to hard-working American families, taxpayers, and businesses. Americans expect results. It’s time we in Congress get serious about delivering them.”

Once the House and Senate pass a uniform budget, it will allow Congress to consider a tax reform proposal under “reconciliation rules”—requiring a 51 vote threshold to pass the Senate.
